Busch's Family Honors Late Driver at Charlotte Pre-Race Ceremony

Samantha Busch and her son Brexton made their first public appearance since the death of Kyle Busch on Sunday, standing on pit road at Charlotte Motor Speedway during a pre-race remembrance ceremony before the Coca-Cola 600 on May 24, 2026. The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, who was 41, died earlier in the week from complications related to pneumonia. Surrounded by fellow drivers, NASCAR Hall of Famer and team owner Richard Childress, and Kurt Busch – Kyle’s brother – the family stood alongside NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell as bagpipes played “Amazing Grace” before a crowd that raised No. 8 flags in tribute.

O’Donnell addressed Samantha and her children directly during the ceremony, telling them the sport stood with them and that they remained NASCAR family. He also spoke to Kyle Busch’s character beyond his racing record, describing a driver who sought quietly to help teammates and act for others without seeking recognition. Fans in the grandstands rose on lap eight as the field passed at speed, a coordinated tribute that drew loud cheers from those in attendance. The Indy 500, held earlier the same day, had also observed a moment of silence for Busch.

Kyle Busch competed across all four of NASCAR’s national series during his career and was a fixture at tracks throughout the country, winning the Cup Series championship twice. His most recent Cup win came at Dover Motor Speedway. The breadth of his activity across NASCAR’s ladder system meant his death was felt well beyond the Cup Series garage, touching personnel, competitors, and fans connected to each level of the sport.

Tributes were expected to continue in the days following the Coca-Cola 600, with the racing community still processing the loss of one of the sport’s most prominent figures of the past two decades.
