Carlsen Makes Classical Return at Malmo to Face Teen Prodigy Erdogmus

Magnus Carlsen is playing classical chess again. And he picked an interesting tournament to do it.

The Norwegian legend headlines TePe Sigeman Chess 2026 in Malmö, Sweden, running May 1-7. It’s his first classical round-robin outside Norway since Tata Steel in 2023 — and the field around him is loaded with young talent.

The headline matchup: Carlsen vs Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. The Turkish teenager is on the verge of crossing 2700, which would break GM Wei Yi’s record as the youngest player ever to reach that rating. Carlsen himself called Erdogmus “the best 14-year-old the world has ever seen.”

Also in the field: Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Arjun Erigaisi, Jorden van Foreest, Zhu Jiner, Andy Woodward, and Nils Grandelius.

Classical Carlsen is back. And he has plenty to prove.
