Chabot Out 4-8 Weeks After Broken Arm Surgery, Senators’ Playoff Push in Peril

Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot will miss the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery Thursday to repair a broken bone in his right arm, with coach Travis Green confirming a recovery timeline of four to eight weeks.

The 29-year-old broke his arm on an unpenalized cross-check from New York Rangers captain J.T. Miller late in the first period of Monday’s 2-1 win. Miller received no penalty on the play.

Chabot has seven goals and 24 assists in 55 games this season, averaging 22:34 of ice time — second only to Jake Sanderson on Ottawa’s blue line.

The timing could hardly be worse. Ottawa sits in the second Eastern Conference wild-card spot with 85 points — level with the New York Islanders but holding a game in hand. The playoffs begin in just over three weeks on April 18.

Ottawa’s blue line is now a wreck: Nick Jensen is on injured reserve, while Lassi Thomson, Dennis Gilbert and ice-time leader Jake Sanderson are all dealing with injuries of their own. The crisis did open the door for top prospect Carter Yakemchuk to make his NHL debut against Detroit.
