Chargers Could Gamble on Aiyuk to Give Justin Herbert a Dangerous Weapon

Brandon Aiyuk hasn’t played since tearing his ACL in October 2024. He’s coming up on two years off the field. And the Los Angeles Chargers are being linked with a move that could cost the equivalent of his $120 million contract value.

The logic isn’t hard to follow. Aiyuk is elite when healthy — one of the better wide receivers in the NFL before the injury. The Chargers’ new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel worked with him directly in San Francisco. He knows exactly what Aiyuk can do, and Justin Herbert throwing to him is a very different conversation from Herbert’s current options.

The 49ers aren’t in a rush to move him. They’d want real value in return. The Chargers have reportedly cooled on the idea, with some reports suggesting they’ve stepped back from the trade speculation.

But the upside is undeniable. A fully fit Aiyuk alongside Herbert changes everything for LA’s offence. The risk is equally clear — you’re paying top dollar for a player returning from a serious ACL tear after 18 months off the field.

Gamble is the right word. Whether the Chargers pull the trigger is another question entirely.
