Furyk Named USA Ryder Cup Captain After Tiger Woods Steps Aside

Jim Furyk is the new Team USA Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 match at Adare Manor in Ireland. The announcement came on May 13, a day before the PGA Championship, with Furyk getting the job after Tiger Woods — the heavy favourite for the role — ruled himself out following a DUI arrest in March. Woods is currently in treatment in Switzerland.
Furyk captained the US in 2018, when Europe won in Paris. He’s since served as vice captain three more times and led the Presidents Cup team that beat the Internationals in Montreal in 2024. He knows the job. He also knows what went wrong recently — the US lost at Bethpage Black 15-13 in 2025, their second straight defeat after Rome in 2023.
His main target is fixing foursomes. The format was a “glaring problem” in his words — the US trailed 11.5-4.5 after the Friday-Saturday sessions in Bethpage. He also wants to turn the captaincy into a year-round operation rather than a scramble in the final months before the match.
“We need to create a blueprint — more continuity for our players and future captains,” Furyk said. “Team USA is a professional sports organisation. This is a 12-month process.”
He hasn’t spoken to Woods yet about a team role but says he plans to once he’s given him enough time and space.
