Infantino Backs Mexico as 2026 Host

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reaffirmed Mexico’s role as a 2026 World Cup co-host despite concerns over rising cartel violence, insisting preparations remain firmly on track for the tournament in North America.

Speaking ahead of key planning meetings, Infantino expressed confidence that Mexico, alongside the United States and Canada, will deliver a safe and successful event. Security fears have surfaced following reports of escalating violence in certain regions, prompting questions about readiness.

“We have full confidence in Mexico and its authorities,” Infantino said. “The World Cup will be a celebration of unity and safety.”

Mexican officials echoed that stance, stressing that host cities are implementing enhanced security strategies. “We are working closely with FIFA to guarantee protection for teams and fans,” a government representative noted.

The 2026 edition, expanded to 48 teams, will mark Mexico’s third time hosting matches, reinforcing its historic role in global football.
