Infantino Confirms Iran Will Play 2026 World Cup Matches on US Soil

The uncertainty is over. FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed on Thursday that Iran will compete at the 2026 World Cup — and will play all three group-stage matches in the United States.

“Of course, Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said, speaking at FIFA’s annual congress in Vancouver.

The confirmation came amid significant political noise. Iranian federation officials were denied entry into Canada for the congress — the only FIFA member association not present in Vancouver. Donald Trump had also raised concerns about Iran’s inclusion, before later reversing course.

Iran are drawn in Group G alongside Egypt, New Zealand, and Belgium. Their matches on American soil are set regardless.

FIFA made the position plain: football plays on.
