Iraq, UAE on standby if Iran exits 2026 World Cup

FIFA could invite Iraq or the United Arab Emirates to the 2026 World Cup if Iran withdraws from the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico amid political tensions. Iran have already secured qualification but their participation is now uncertain.
Iranian football chief Mehdi Taj admitted the situation remains unresolved. “It is unlikely we will participate, but the final decision belongs to the authorities,” he said.
FIFA is closely monitoring the developments. “Our priority is to ensure the tournament runs smoothly with all teams confirmed,” a FIFA official noted.
If Iran officially pulls out, Iraq — currently involved in the qualification pathway — is viewed as the most likely replacement, while the UAE could also step in depending on FIFA’s final ruling.
