Kai Trump Focuses on Golf, Not Politics, at ESPYs

Kai Trump, granddaughter of President Donald Trump and an incoming freshman on the University of Miami women’s golf team, said at the ESPYs on July 15, 2026, that she deliberately avoids political commentary and instead uses her video blog to document her athletic journey. Speaking to Sportico at the event, held at the David H. Koch Theater in New York, she framed her public platform around sport and personal progress rather than the political environment surrounding her family.

“Honestly, I kind of stay out of politics completely. It’s just not my thing,” Trump told Sportico. “I just like showing my life and showing how you can still be an athlete and you can still do a ton of other things and enjoy a ton of other things.” She added that her aim is to show a younger audience that athletic ambition is compatible with a broad range of experiences, and that she intends to document her college years as they unfold.

When pressed on the intersection of politics and sport – a reference to a UFC event held on the South Lawn of the White House on June 13, 2026, which she attended – Trump acknowledged the occasion but kept her remarks narrow. “I thought it was great,” she said, citing the presence of veterans at the event, while reiterating she does not engage with the political dimensions of such occasions.

Trump is set to begin her collegiate career at Miami as one of two freshmen on the roster, alongside Bella Dovhey. The Hurricanes compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of college golf’s most competitive circuits, and her debut is expected in the upcoming season.
