The Miami Marlins have compiled the best record in Major League Baseball during June, going 17-5 through the month and moving within striking distance of a postseason place as the All-Star break approaches. Two pillars underpin the surge. Whether a roster assembled on a modest payroll – the draft cites an approximate figure of $73 million – can hold pace with higher-spending Wild Card rivals remains the central question facing the club.
