Medvedev fights back from two sets down in Melbourne epic

Daniil Medvedev became the first player at this year’s Australian Open to win a match from two sets down, battling past Fabian Marozsan to reach the fourth round in Melbourne on Friday. The Russian 11th seed overturned a difficult start to secure a 6-7 (5-7), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3 victory, relying on resilience and experience after a shaky 2023 at Grand Slams.

Medvedev, last year’s finalist, looked in trouble before shifting momentum late in the third set and dominating the fourth. “Last year, when I was two sets down, I always came back and still lost,” he said. “When he broke me again in the fifth, I thought, ‘not again’.”

The 28-year-old admitted nerves played a role but praised his mental strength. “I managed to stay strong and I’m happy about it,” Medvedev added. Known for marathon matches in Melbourne, he has now won seven of his 11 five-set matches at the tournament.

The comeback win underlined Medvedev’s reputation as one of the tour’s toughest fighters and keeps his Australian Open campaign firmly on track.
