Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics begin with 665 athletes

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games officially begin on March 6 in Verona, Italy, bringing together 665 athletes from 56 nations to compete across six winter disciplines during the 10-day event that runs until March 15. The opening ceremony takes place at the historic Arena di Verona, launching one of the largest editions of the Games in Paralympic history.

Athletes will battle for 79 sets of medals in sports including para-alpine skiing, para-biathlon, para cross-country skiing, para-ice hockey, para snowboard and wheelchair curling. Competitions will be staged across several venues in northern Italy, with Cortina d’Ampezzo and Milan hosting most of the events.

IPC president Andrew Parsons said the tournament promises elite competition and inspiration. “These Games will showcase world-class sport and incredible determination from Paralympians,” he said.

Organizers also expect strong performances from leading athletes representing Europe, North America and Asia. “Every athlete here has a story of resilience,” a Games official noted. “Milano Cortina will celebrate that spirit on the world stage.”
