Murakami Leads AL in Home Runs After 53 Games With Chicago

Munetaka Murakami leads the American League with 18 home runs through his first 53 games with the Chicago White Sox, placing him second across all of Major League Baseball and tying him for the fourth-most home runs by any player through the first 53 games of a career, according to MLB.

Across 230 plate appearances, the Japanese infielder ranks first among all MLB rookies in home runs, RBIs (37), slugging percentage (.540), OPS (.914), runs scored (37), and walks (41). He also leads Chicago’s roster in each of those categories as well as on-base percentage (.374). His 155 OPS+ leads the White Sox, and his .914 OPS ranks 12th in the majors. Despite the power output, Murakami has hit just three doubles. His 37 RBIs are tied for fourth in the AL, his 41 walks rank fifth in MLB, and he sits third among rookies with 1.6 wins above replacement.

Statcast data place Murakami in the 97th percentile in average exit velocity (94.0 mph), the 98th percentile in hard-hit percentage (58.0%), and the 98th percentile in barrel percentage (20.5%). The substantial gap between his on-base percentage (.374) and batting average (.235) – a difference of .139 – reflects a highly selective approach at the plate, though he is also tied for fourth in MLB with 76 strikeouts. In Japan between 2018 and 2025, Murakami played both first and third base, but has made all but three of his White Sox appearances at first base, with the remaining three coming as designated hitter.

With the White Sox rebuilding around a young roster, Murakami’s production offers one of the franchise’s clearest benchmarks for measuring progress as the season continues.
