Nadal Is Back on a Tennis Court — at the Bernabéu, With Sinner and Bellingham

Retired or not, Rafael Nadal can still serve up a moment.
The Madrid Open installed a clay court inside Santiago Bernabéu stadium this week, and the guest list was extraordinary. Nadal partnered Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and midfielder Jude Bellingham in a friendly exhibition session on Thursday. Club president Florentino Pérez watched from the umpire’s chair.
Nadal retired from professional tennis in 2024. But in his home city, on clay, this felt like a reminder of what the sport looked like when he owned it.
Bellingham had been at the Madrid Open the day before watching young Spanish prodigy Rafael Jódar. Sinner, who is currently defending his Madrid Open title, didn’t seem to mind the distraction. The crowd — and the internet — loved every second of it.
