NBA, FIBA advance talks on new pan-European league

The NBA and FIBA have moved a step closer to launching an ambitious pan-European basketball league, with discussions intensifying around a merit-based entry system rather than fixed franchises. The proposal, under review this month, would reshape Europe’s club landscape by allowing teams to qualify on performance while aligning global calendars and commercial interests.
Officials say the concept aims to raise standards, boost revenues and create clearer pathways between domestic leagues and a continental competition. The model would differ from the NBA’s closed system, blending promotion principles familiar to European sport with centralized governance.
“We’re exploring structures that respect Europe’s traditions while elevating the product,” a league source said. A FIBA representative added, “Merit-based access is essential to maintain sporting integrity.” However, a senior club executive cautioned that “existing competitions must not be weakened in the process.”
Talks follow years of informal dialogue as basketball’s popularity grows across Europe. If agreed, the league could launch in phases, with scheduling, revenue sharing and qualification criteria still to be finalized— signaling a potentially transformative moment for the sport on the continent.
