Qatar’s Assim Madibo handed five-match FIFA World Cup ban after tackle broke Canada star’s leg

FIFA’s disciplinary committee has suspended Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for five matches following a tackle on Canada’s Ismaël Koné that fractured the Canadian’s tibia and fibula during their Group B fixture at BC Place in Vancouver on June 18, 2026. Madibo was shown a red card during the match itself; the subsequent ban extends the punishment well beyond the tournament and into future international competition.

The incident came during a match Canada won 6-0, with Qatar reduced to ten men for a significant portion of play. Koné underwent successful surgery on his left leg, and the two players were later photographed embracing. Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui stated after the match that Madibo had not intended the injury, and Canada head coach Jesse Marsch told The Athletic that Madibo visited the Canada dressing room to apologise to Koné. The suspension remains subject to appeal.

Qatar’s elimination was confirmed when they lost 3-1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their following group fixture, with Madibo already serving his match suspension. Canada, despite the loss of Koné, advanced from Group B in second place behind Switzerland, who beat Canada 2-1 to claim the group.

Canada will travel to Los Angeles for their round-of-32 match against the runner-up of Group A, which comprises Mexico, South Korea, South Africa and Czechia, with that group’s final standings to be determined on Sunday.
