Verstappen tipped for shock Mercedes move in 2026

Max Verstappen could leave Red Bull for Mercedes in 2026, according to an F1 insider, as speculation grows around the Dutch driver’s future despite his long-term contract.
The claim emerged this week amid ongoing debate in the paddock, with Verstappen still tied to Red Bull until 2028 but increasingly linked to rival teams due to shifting performance levels and upcoming rule changes.
One insider suggested a move is realistic if Red Bull fails to stay competitive. “If the car is not strong enough, Max will always look at his options,” the source said. Another added, “Mercedes remains an attractive destination, especially with the new regulations coming.”
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has long admired Verstappen, once admitting he would “love to have him” in the team , while McLaren CEO Zak Brown previously predicted the champion could switch sides in 2026 .
Still, Verstappen has played down the rumours, insisting his focus remains on performance. “I have a contract, and we just focus on results,” he said in a recent interview .
With major technical changes set for 2026, the next two seasons could be decisive in shaping where one of F1’s biggest stars races next.
